Jake Johnson stars as Dusty Boyd, a washed-up former tennis prodigy whose career flamed out years ago after a humiliating junior-circuit loss to a young Andy Roddick. Now he’s reduced to coaching unruly kids at the suburban country club his father Chuck (Ed Harris) owns — and Chuck treats the club’s growing pickleball faction like an existential threat to everything tennis stands for. When Chuck digs up an obscure clause in the club’s charter forcing the two factions to settle things with a champion-versus-champion duel, Dusty is drafted to defend tennis’s honor.
The twist: a reaggravated wrist injury takes tennis off the table entirely, and the club doctor — played by producer Ben Stiller — “prescribes” pickleball as rehab. Dusty grudgingly shows up to an open-play session, gets thoroughly schooled by a group of retirement-age regulars, and ends up partnered with Candace (Mary Steenburgen), who is navigating her own recent divorce. Their partnership becomes the emotional spine of the movie — several critics singled it out as more interesting than the tennis-versus-pickleball plot wrapped around it — and the story wisely swerves away from a predictable romance to become something closer to a story about two people rebuilding their independence side by side. It all builds to a finale duel that comes down, fittingly, to a prolonged dink battle at the net.
