Why These Pickleball Paddles Were Removed from PPA Play on September 1, 2025

In a sweeping move to uphold competitive integrity, the United Pickleball Association of America (UPA-A) enforced its new 2025 Paddle Certification Standard on September 1, 2025. This update led to the removal of several paddles from the approved list for PPA Tour play, sparking debate and urgency among players and manufacturers alike.

Why the Paddles Were Disqualified

The UPA-A’s updated standard introduced stricter testing protocols designed to ensure fairness and consistency across professional play. Key changes included:

  • Spin and Speed Testing Enhancements: Paddles now undergo more rigorous lab testing to measure spin potential and velocity output.
  • Model-Specific Certification: Each paddle must be certified by its exact model number and core thickness—no blanket approvals.
  • End of Provisional Approvals: Paddles previously allowed under USA Pickleball’s provisional status are no longer eligible.
  • MOI Clamp Restrictions: Semi-permanent modifications like Moment of Inertia (MOI) clamps now disqualify paddles.

These changes aim to eliminate performance inconsistencies and prevent unfair advantages, especially as paddle technology evolves rapidly.
